Sometimes, it is the little things that matter most when you are planning a trip. Here are some simple overland camping hacks that can make your trip much more enjoyable.
Hack #1 – Invest In A Good Sleeping Bag
The first hack is to invest in a good sleeping bag. A sleeping bag is one of the most important pieces of gear for camping. It will keep you warm, dry and comfortable at night.
A good quality sleeping bag should be able to keep you warm down to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius). You don’t want to get a sleeping bag that’s too heavy or too bulky, so look for one that has a lightweight design, possibly with a removable liner for warm weather.
Most people skimp on sleeping bags, but remember, you will be in that thing for 8 hours a night.
Hack #2 – Bring Extra Bedding
Extra bedding is another overland camping hack that will help you sleep better.
The best way to sleep is in a bed and not on the ground, so you want to try to separate yourself as much as possible.
If you have an air mattress or an inflatable mattress, bring it with you on your trip, along with a suitable battery powered air pump. Hate air mattress? Look for a foam mattress that can be compressed to take up very little room.
Hack #3 – Pack Light
Packing light is something that you should consider, even when car camping on an overland trip. Even when you have an entire vehicle to fill, you can not bring everything.
A good way to pack light is to start by deciding what you need and what you don’t need, then find an alternative that can do the same job for you and possibly multiple jobs. Multi use tools are the key to minimizing the storage space needed. Instead of a shovel, for example, buy a tactical shovel that can do more jobs.
Hack #4 – Bring A High Quality Cookset
A cookset is a collection of cookware, most often including pots, pans and utensils for cooking. A good kit is designed for both camping and backpacking. Usually that means low weight and multi function.
Like a sleeping bag, you should not skimp on your cookware. Many people say that overlanding is just traveling to find a place to eat. This means that your nightly meal prep is very important and a good cook set will make things easier.
Hack #5 – Pack Spare Clothes & Gear
You can almost never have too much clothing. Things happen and the last thing that you want to be is stuck in dirty clothes. Even worse is being stuck in wet clothing when nothing dry is available.
At a minimum, bring extra socks and underwear and thank me later.
Hack #6 – Keep Your Food Cold
One of the most common food-related problems is the need to keep food cold while traveling.
The easiest way to make sure that your food stays cold is by using a quality ice chest. A cooler such as a Yeti or high end Igloos is advisable, because it will keep food cold longer.
If room allows, take two coolers with you. One cooler for drinks and one cooler for food. This protects your food cooler from being open too often
