The Chevy Equinox has grown to become one of the most reliable, versatile and affordable vehicles on the market but is it suitable for an overland build? Many off road enthusiasts and adventurers are beginning to explore this question due to the low cost and availability of the Equinox. So, let’s take a look.
Given its size, capability and performance the Chevy Equinox is certainly capable of being an overland vehicle but there are a few important considerations you must make before taking this expedition.
First, the Equinox is not designed for serious off roading. It does have a ground clearance that allows it to handle conventional trail obstacles but when it comes to more difficult terrain such as boulder strewn hillsides and rivers it may be difficult for the Equinox to navigate.
Second, the Equinox does not have the same level of power, speed and towing capacity as larger off road vehicles such as Four Runner’s or Jeeps. This means that you may have to take shorter and more leisurely trips than if you were using a traditional overland vehicle.
Third, the Equinox’s fuel economy isn’t particularly impressive. With a combined rating of under 25 miles per gallon you may need to make more stops for fuel than if you were using a more efficient vehicle.
Fourth, the Equinox’s interior is fairly small so you may need to limit the size and amount of gear you bring. Not having enough space can quickly become a burden during an overland trip. Yes, you can add a roof rack, but more internal storage would be nice.
Finally, the Equinox may not be well suited for long distance overland trips. Overlanding often involves long stretches of driving and the Equinox may not have the necessary level of comfort for these trips. Not convinced, take a long test drive.
Considering its capabilities and limitations the Equinox can certainly be an overland vehicle given the right circumstances, but it will be a lot of work and you will be making sacrifices. If you’re planning a short trip on mostly flat terrain with minimal gear then the Equinox may be a great choice. However, if you’re looking for a vehicle that can tackle more difficult terrain and longer distance trips then you may be better off with a larger, more capable off road vehicle.
